Exterior Venetian blinds on a modern home with large glass openings

The Why

Why exterior venetian blinds

Exterior venetian blinds sit on the outside of the glass. When the laths are tilted, they reflect solar radiation before it reaches the window, which can lower cooling load in summer. Rotate them further and the same blinds provide privacy while daylight still enters. It is a single mechanical element that controls sun, view and privacy over the day — configurable in six matt lath colours, three installation systems and a wide RAL box palette.

Benefits

Core benefits

  • Solar control before the glass

Laths reflect sunlight on the outside of the window, so heat is intercepted before it enters — an intent-of-use benefit; project performance is confirmed during specification.

  • 90° lath rotation

Free stepless tilt adjustment between fully open and closed positions gives day-long control over light, view and privacy.

  • Privacy with daylight

Angled laths let daylight in while blocking the direct line of sight from outside.

  • Cooling-load reduction

By intercepting solar radiation before the glass, exterior venetian blinds can reduce heat gain in summer. No guaranteed savings figure is claimed.

  • Automation-ready

Somfy motor and control options are available; the specific motor and hub are selected during specification.

  • Façade aesthetics

Six matt lath colours and a wide RAL box palette let the blind coordinate with windows, entry doors and cladding.

COLOUR VISUALIZER

Choose lath and box colours

Select a lath colour and a box-and-guide colour to preview all three installation systems together. Screen colours are indicative — the final colour is confirmed on physical RAL samples in the showroom.

Box and guide colour

NoteThe box and guide colour is applied to the two facade-mounted systems (centre and right). The top-mounted box (left) is typically finished to match the window and is confirmed at specification. LATH PROFILES

Z90, S90, C80 — three lath profiles, one product family

Z90, S90 and C80 are three lath profiles of the same exterior venetian blind family. They differ in profile geometry and visual character. The lath that suits your facade, exposure and wind conditions is confirmed during consultation.

  • Z90 lath profile — exterior venetian blind

    Z-PROFILE LATH

    Z90

A Z-shaped lath profile with crisp shadow lines and a tight closure appearance. Design language, not a performance rating — final suitability is confirmed during consultation.

    • Z-profile geometry
    • Tight closure appearance
    • Balanced daylight/darkness feel
  • S90 lath profile — exterior venetian blind

    S-PROFILE LATH

    S90

An S-shaped lath with a softer rolled edge and a slightly softer visual character than Z90. The right lath for a given facade, exposure and wind conditions is confirmed during consultation.

    • S-profile geometry
    • Softer rolled edge
    • Discreet visual character
  • C80 lath profile — exterior venetian blind

    C-PROFILE LATH

    C80

A C-shaped lath with a narrower architectural read. Drutex reports C80 as its most-chosen lath. The right choice for your facade is confirmed during consultation.

    • C-profile geometry
    • Discreet architectural read
    • Drutex reports C80 as its most-chosen lath

NoteNo wind, thermal or acoustic ratings and no maximum dimensions are published on this page. These are confirmed at specification.

INSTALLATION SYSTEMS

Top-mounted, Adaptive, Adaptive Blind

Three installation systems share the same mechanics. What changes is how the box integrates with the building. The right system depends on wall build-up, lintel, insulation depth and window schedule, and is confirmed on site.

  • Top-mounted exterior venetian blind — box installed on the window frame

    BSO MONOBLOC

    Top-mounted

Arrives as one unit with the window and is typically planned with new windows. The box sits above the frame.

    Location

    Installed on the window frame

    Box dimensions (W × H)

    • 260 × 275 mm
    • 300 × 308 mm
    • 365 × 308 mm
    • 425 × 308 mm
  • Adaptive exterior venetian blind — mounted on the building facade

    BSO RÉNOVATION

    Adaptive

Retrofit-friendly variant that mounts to the building facade over existing windows.

    Location

    Installed on the building facade

    Box dimensions (W × H)

    • 140 × 240 mm
    • 140 × 300 mm
  • Adaptive Blind exterior venetian blind — recessed facade variant

    STORE ADAPTATIF

    Adaptive Blind

The newest facade variant. Adds the 350 mm box for larger openings and can be recessed into the insulation layer.

    Location

    Installed on the building facade

    Box dimensions (W × H)

    • 140 × 240 mm
    • 140 × 300 mm
    • 140 × 350 mm

Common to all three systems

  • Free stepless lath-tilt adjustment
  • Recessed or self-supporting roller guides
  • Optional emergency control — described by Drutex as a fire-safety element in its documentation
  • Can integrate with smart-management systems

Not every system suits every building. EDKAN confirms compatibility on site or during consultation.

CONSTRUCTION

Construction and components

Every exterior venetian blind is assembled from the same set of components: guide rails (coulisses) at the sides, a Somfy drive, the laths, and the box that houses the roll-up assembly. The specific drive, controls and installation variant are confirmed at specification.

  • 1 — ROLLER GUIDES / COULISSES

ZF-A and ZF-S guide-rail variants. A guide profile for spans up to 260 mm is available according to Drutex documentation.

  • 2 — SOMFY DRIVE

The referenced Somfy J4 WT Protect and J4 io Protect motors include overload protection, obstacle detection and icing detection according to Somfy specifications. Compatibility with SOMFY TaHoma when configured with a compatible motor and hub.

  • 3 — LATHS

Free stepless tilt adjustment over 90°. Laths reflect sunlight before it reaches the window. Drutex recommends adding a weather station to the venetian-blind system when full automation is required.

  • 4 — BOX / COFFRE

Flush-mounted, top-mounted and adaptive box variants depending on the installation method chosen.

Engineering

Somfy automation & Smart Home

Automation is an option. When configured with a compatible Somfy motor and hub, exterior venetian blinds can be controlled through TaHoma. The final motor and controls are selected at specification.
